In the 1940s John Conway tried to create a machine that could replicate itself. The Game of Life is how he did it. Conway's Game of Life is a two dimensional universe in which each single celled organism interacts with its neighbors according to the following rules:

1. Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbors dies, as if caused by underpopulation.
2. Any live cell with more than three live neighbors dies, as if by overcrowding.
3. Any live cell with two or three live neighbors lives on to the next generation.
4. Any dead cell with exactly three live neighborrs becomes a live cell.

The initial pattern determines the outcome.

The was the beginning of cellular automata and led to single celled computer creatures in a world that could self-organize and behave in ways that weren't programmed into them.
