Why do you weight what you weight?

One day I went to bed skinny, the next I woke up fat, well maybe not quite that fast, I’d had to go out and purchase larger jeans every six months. But not once did it occur to me that I was gaining weight. It was like I had checked out of my body or something.

It took months to lose the weight and I made a vow never to repeat that experience.

I created the BMI/BodyFat/Calorie calculator to keep my weight in line. Every morning I step on the scale. If I’m over my threshold weight I use the calculator to tell me how to take those couple of pounds back off, before they multiply.

Do you know what shape your shape is in?

I didn’t.

I thought I was in great shape, and I was writing this app to help others find out where they stood.

I came home from the library loaded with books, I spent weeks downloading and reading medical papers. I wanted an overall measure of fitness that required no special equipment. Here’s what I came up with.

BMI
Body Mass Index has been used since the 1980s, BMI greatly improved weight information over standard height and weight tables.

Body Fat
Because BMI alone can’t tell if you are carrying muscle or fat on your frame. The YMCA and Navy body fat tests are 97% accurate for most people.

1.5 Mile Run Test
Because you should be able to run far enough fast enough to save your life. 1.5 to 2 mile runs are the preferred way to test aerobic fitness.

Rockport Fitness Test
Used by cardiologists to measure heart fitness and the effect of your aerobic routine on your heart’s fitness. Watch your workouts improve your VO2max.

Pushups and Situps Strength Test
Used by every military force to test overall strength fitness. Measure your core and upper body strength.

Modified Reach Test
Used since the 1950s to test flexibility. Good flexibility reduces injuries and improves mobility.

Then I took this amazingly simple test. OMG it was not what I expected my shape to be. Now I’m doing situps, running, and getting myself back into tip top shape for my age.

I had been writing iPhone apps for about a year when sitting at the computer one day I felt a twinge in my chest. I tried to remember the last time I’d jogged or run and I couldn’t. Somewhere along the way I’d stopped exercising and I hadn’t even noticed.
